Standing tall amidst the bustling city of Bandung, St. Aloysius School is a testament to resilience and unwavering commitment to education. Established on June 21, 1930, by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (CSA), the school’s history is marked by both challenges and triumphs. During the Japanese occupation, several CSA Brothers were imprisoned in Japanese concentration camps, marking a difficult period for the community. Many brotherhood schools, boarding houses, and orphanages were seized and used as Japanese military bases, forcing the evacuation of students and staff to safer locations.
Post-independence, schools, boarding houses, and orphanages, including St. Aloysius School in Bandung, were returned to the Brotherhood. However, new challenges emerged. Foreign-born Brothers were prohibited from teaching in Indonesia, leading to the departure of many Brothers back to the Netherlands. Some Brothers chose to undergo the process of becoming Indonesian citizens, but this resulted in a shortage of experienced educators.
By the mid-1970s, the CSA Brothers had left Bandung. Aloysius School was taken over by the Diocese of Bandung, which entrusted the management of the school to the Order of the Holy Cross (OSC). Pastor Henk van Iperen, OSC, was appointed to lead St. Aloysius School. Under his leadership, the school embarked on a new era of growth, guided by a clear vision and mission. In 1978, Pastor Henk pioneered the establishment of St. Aloysius Kindergarten and Elementary School on Jalan Tornojoyo, followed by the founding of St. Aloysius School in Batununggal.
St. Aloysius School goes beyond academic education, placing a strong emphasis on character development and moral values. The school implements a comprehensive curriculum that integrates general knowledge, science, technology, and arts with character education rooted in Christian values. Students are encouraged to become critical thinkers, creative leaders, and responsible individuals committed to their communities and the environment. From its pre-independence roots to the present day, the school has produced generations of outstanding alumni who embody integrity and excellence. St. Aloysius School remains a beacon of education in Bandung, shaping young minds and fostering a legacy of service and social responsibility.
